The s have been defined by hipster fashion, athleisure , a revival of austerity-era period pieces and alternative fashions, swag inspired outfits, unisex early s style elements influenced by grunge and skater fashions. Women's hairstyles in the early s had been fairly individualistic, although most British, Irish, Australian, Russian, Korean, and continental European women kept the simplistic, straight, long and natural coloured hairstyles of the mid s. Many women also used hair extensions to make their hair look much longer and fuller. By the mid s, straight and wavy hairstyles were dominant globally, especially the blonde dyed beach waves. Wavy hair began to decline in popularity from onwards, but bone straight hair remained common in Britain and Europe.

Like a movie, every fashion show is a collaboration, but John Galliano's productions push that notion to the max. The body paint alone in this show must have taken teams of people to perfect. The stated theme in theory was a relatively comprehensible—for Galliano—"Road Warriors on Venice Beach. Yes, there were road warriors in a cyberpunk sequence that highlighted neon Mohawks, the aforementioned body paint, and perhaps some underwear. And yes, the Venice Beach ambience was reflected in a general tattoo-and-piercing indulgence on the part of the mannequins. Any clothing of substance was worn by arms-dealer look-alikes sporting unlikely satin bondage pants and taffeta coats along with their Arab headdresses and huge stogies, or the Black Panthers who rather extraordinarily patrolled the catwalk in multipocketed nylon military jackets. Fashion is a popular aesthetic expression in a certain time and context, especially in clothing , footwear , lifestyle , accessories , makeup , hairstyle and body proportions. Baroque , Rococo , etc. Even though they are often used together, the term fashion differs from clothes and costume, where the first describes the material and technical garment, whereas the second has been relegated to special senses like fancy-dress or masquerade wear. Fashion instead describes the social and temporal system that "activates" dress as a social signifier in a certain time and context.
Let's float a theory: The last few seasons of Versace's menswear have seen a paring-down of the clothing—a purification, if you will—as though the ground were being leveled for a major new design statement. Is recently employed consultant Alexandre Plokhov, designer of the late, lamented New York label Cloak, the deliverer of that statement? The first Versace collection in which he had any say certainly hinted at changes afoot, starting with the portentous blast of Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain , which opened the show.
